“He is a fool who cannot be angry, but he is really a wise man who will not.”

The habit of keeping pleasant is indeed better than an income of a thousand dollars a year. The life without cheerfulness is like the severe winter without the sun.

We all love cheerful company, but we are apt(apt: likely or having a natural tendency to do sth. 易于……的)to forget that cheerfulness is a habit which can be cultivated by all.

We find it very difficult to be gay when we are in distress. It requires great courage. We should never forget that to be cheerful when it is not easy to be cheerful shows greatness.Thorny(thorny: painfully controversial; vexatious 令人苦恼的;棘手的)may be our way. But how happy is the conqueror’s song!

The perfection of cheerfulness consists in the happy frame of mind. It is displayed in good temper and kind behavior. It arises partly from personal goodness and partly from belief in the goodness of others. It sees the glory in the grass and the sunshine on the flower; it encourages happy thoughts, and lives in an atmosphere of peace. It costs nothing, and yet it is invaluable. It blesses its possessor, and affords a large measure of enjoyment to others.

Emulation

Three Days to Live

If, by some miracle, I were granted three days to live, to be followed by a relapse into silence, I should divide the period into three parts.

The First Day

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life become valuable. First, I would like to meet my dear friends who always come to visit me since I was ill. And we will go to someplace which is really beautiful for all day. We stay together and chat with each other. We can take a walk hand in hand. Eventually, we can cook the dinner for ourselves.

When memories remind me of the days we spent together in school before I got ill, I feel really warm. And I am so glad that we can meet together.

I know the first day would be a busy one. But I know it will become the most unforgettable one.

The Second Day

The next day—the second day to live—I should arise with the dawn and see the thrilling miracle by which night is transformed into day. I should behold with awe the magnificent panorama of light with which the sun awakens the sleeping earth.

I want to visit my relatives on this day. My aunt is a beautiful woman with a gentle heart, who treats me as her own daughter until now. I extremely appreciate her. My uncle is a teacher, and he always brings me many books to read. Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” When I felt upset, these books helped me a lot indeed. Due to these books,I become more and more brave. I know that time is very precious for me. So I want to stay with them at least for one day.

The Third Day

The following day, I should stay with my dear parents and grandparents.

I feel so happy that I can meet them. And we become the closest families because of the blood relationship. They teach me not only a lot of knowledge, but also the truth of how to behave myself. When I was ill, they stayed with me from day to night. I know they tried their best to take care of me. In fact, they never told me about these things. They always pretend they are fine. I want to say thanks to them. Because of them, I can have a happy life in these years.

I, who was about to die, can give one hint to those who live—one admonition to those who would make full use of the gift of life: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. And the same method can be applied to the other senses. Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strains of an orchestra, as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow. Touch each object you want to touch as if tomorrow your tactile sense would fail. Smell the perfume of flowers, taste with relish each morsel, as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again. Make the most of every sense; glory in all the facets of pleasure and beauty which the world reveals to you through the several means of contact which nature provides. But of all the feelings, I am sure that to live must be the most delightful.

生气,是我们健康的头号杀手;
